A North Carolina port has been shut down and officials urged people to leave the area Tuesday after nine containers with highly explosive materials were punctured, The Associated Press reported Tuesday. Morehead City Police Chief Wes Lail told local news statioin WTVD that the chemical involved is pentaerythritol tetranitrate, a powerful explosive. The size of the containers and how they were damaged is unknown. Police also told people near the port to stay away from windows and doors. The Morehead City port is one of the deepest on the East Coast. According to the port’s Web site, its main import last year was sulfur products and its top export was phosphate.
