School kids told to leave the sweets at home for holiday celebrations

Talk about a bunch of killjoys. Teachers in the Boston suburb of Westford have decided they know what is best for the children in their school. If I had a child in that school I would keep them home that day and with all the other parents, host a party with the kids at my own home in a show of protest. J

Westford school officials are getting tough on classroom holiday parties.

They’re banning sugary snacks and sweetened beverages from the celebrations this year.

Students are being told to leave the Christmas cookies, cakes, candy bars, and soda at home and to bring fruits, unsweetened juices, popcorn and raisins instead.

Superintendent Everett Olsen says the ban on holiday sweets has nothing to do with being politically correct, rather, his motive is simply promoting a healthy lifestyle.

“We aren’t trying to take the Christmas out of Christmas. We’re not trying to take the enjoyment out of children’s lives. We’re just trying to act responsible,” he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Mike Macklin.

The school’s goal is to avoid the types of sweets that pile on empty calories and contribute to childhood obesity.

James ‘Whitey’ Bulger Arrested in Santa Monica

The capture for one of the most wanted U.S. fugitives touches on the origins of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s parent company.

James “Whitey” Bulger was arrested Wednesday near Los Angeles, law enforcement officials said. Bulger, one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted, is accused of leading Boston mobsters for decades. If at least one allegation is true, his organization also launched a chain of events that led to the formation of UFC owner Zuffa.

Before moving back to Las Vegas in the early 1990s, UFC President Dana White managed a boxing gym in South Boston. But a run-in with the Bulger enterprise convinced him to leave New England, White said.

Nicole Bruton, seven months pregnant stabs three people

Ah life in the ghetto. You have to admire people that can work up the energy to make babies one after another, get up and stab three people but not go find a job. What a loser.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Massachusetts woman who’s seven months pregnant faced a judge Thursday on charges she stabbed three other people in Providence after an argument.

The stabbing happened at the Manton Heights Housing Project on Wednesday. Nicole Bruton, whose pregnancy is considered high-risk, is charged with three counts of felony assault for the incident.

“This defendant produced a knife from under her shirt, and which time she stabbed and slashed these three individuals,” said prosecutors.

The victims, ages 37, 18 and 13, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident. Police said Bruton had fled the scene in a Porsche SUV, but was soon arrested.

Her attorney said in court Thursday that Bruton, a mother of three, has been the emergency-room coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for two years.

“She is the mother of three children, she was down in that vacity, because she has taken to of her children on school vacation to see their aunt,” said Bruton’s lawyer.

The judge set bail at $15,000 cash or surety. Bruton’s fiancé said he plans to post bail.

Arnold Stang dies in Boston, MA.

I know most people don’t know who Arnold Stang was. I know him mostly from old 50′s and 60′s TV shows and cartoons. He was on shows like I Love Lucy, Milton Berle Show and various TV shows. He was the voice of Nurtle the Turtle in Pinocchio in Outter Space. They actually made the cartoon character look like a nerd too. I just wanted to give Arnold Stang the recognition he deserves, because he contributed a lot to the industry and helped to make my life a little better. JD

Arnold Stang, an actor who appeared alongside Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra and was known for his nerdy looks and distinctive nasal voice, has died. He was 91.

Stang died Sunday of pneumonia at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts, said JoAnne Stang, his wife of 60 years.

She attributed her husband’s career longevity to his willingness to tackle any professional challenge.

“He was really unique, because he could perform in any role, comedy or drama, he just loved it all,” she said Tuesday. “He always thought of himself just as an actor, not any particular kind of actor, but just an actor who would play whatever he was asked to play.”

Despite often playing goofy characters, Stang was the consummate professional, preparing the same for his biggest roles and the smallest commercials.

“I remember how smart he was, and how hard-working, and how disciplined he was, no matter what the role,” his wife said.

The slight and diminutive Stang started his career on the radio as a teenager and never lost his love of the medium.

JoAnne Stang remembers her husband zipping across Manhattan in the 1940s and ’50s, from radio show to radio show, all live and challenging in their own way because all the acting is done through voice, with no facial expressions or body language, she said.

“That was his education,” she said.

He played alongside Berle on radio and television in the 1950s, starred as Sinatra’s sidekick in the 1955 movie “The Man with the Golden Arm,” and was a member of the ensemble comedic cast of “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” in 1963.

The dramatic role alongside Sinatra was one of his favorites, his wife said.

He voiced cartoons, including the lead character in the 1960s cartoon “Top Cat,” and did dozens of commercials, perhaps most notably for the Chunky candy bar.

He appeared in movies alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Cosby and continued acting into his 80s, playing a role in the 1993 movie “Dennis the Menace.”

Stang invented and mischievously perpetuated a story that he was born and raised in the Boston suburb of Chelsea. But his wife said he was really raised in Brooklyn. He lived in the Boston suburb of Needham for the past decade.

In addition to his wife, Stang is survived by son David and daughter Deborah.
