FONTANA – A 16-year-old Fontana girl was shot and killed Saturday night while with a group of friends at a city park.
Witnesses told police the friends had gathered at Northgate Park in the 7800 block of Celeste Avenue when they were shot at by a some males around 11 p.m.
The shooters were not acquainted with the group, police said.
The girl died at the scene.
By Sunday afternoon a memorial with candles, balloons and flowers and picture of the girl had been set up at the park.
Family members who gathered near the memorial on Sunday evening identified the slain girl as Ashley Caldera. She was a student at A.B. Miller High School and would have been a junior in the fall.
An aunt said the girl was celebrating her 16th birthday.
The girl and a few friends were on their way to another friend’s house to spend the night. On the way, they stopped at the park while they waited on another acquaintance to join them.
“They couldn’t have been there more than 10 or 15 minutes,” the aunt said.
