6 Dead , 4 Injured in New Mexico Shooting

Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz confirmed just minutes ago that six people are dead as a result of a shooting at Emcore Corporation earlier this morning. The six included the shooter, police said.

Schultz said they believe the incident was domestic in nature. A 37-year-old man, who is a former employee of Emcore, is believed to be the gunman. Police believe he acted alone and that a current employee of the firm, his wife or girlfriend, was the target of the attack. Police say the man’s children, who live out of Albuquerque, were taken into protective custody earlier today.

A University Hospital spokesman confirmed just now that six victims have arrived at the campus hospital. One of those was dead on arrival, another died in the operating room, two are undergoing medical procedures and two others are considered stable.

A witness reported to the Journal earlier that employees were told there was a gunman on the campus of Emcore Corporation and several people had been shot. Emcore is a solar panel and fiber-optics manufacturer on Eubank SE, near Kirtland Air Force Base.

As of this hour, Central and Southern are closed at Eubank. Information from the Journal’s Jeff Proctor, who is on the scene, indicates that there is a massive police response to this incident. Two mobile crime labs have been seen moving into the area.

Several ambulances were also seen leaving the scene.
