The first remote control televisions

A mother teaching her remote controls how to operate the new television

I was the remote control. I would be kicking it in my bedroom and my mother would shout in a heavy Brooklyn accent, “Johnnyboy, can you come put on channel four?” I would angrily walk out to change the channel and as I walked by, my dad would add “Get us a cup of coffee and a pack of cigarettes too, and don’t forget the matches.” There was no such thing as a Bic lighter at the time.

I mean, these people were sitting five feet from the television, but it was me or one of my sisters that had to get up to put on channel four.

As it turns out, I was the only human in the house that had the ability to adjust the color and contrast to best suit my father. I could be down the block playing kick the can with friends, and the man would walk down to the end of the driveway and bellow “Johnnyboy!”

I would be thinking “Shit man, now what does he want?” I would get to the house and he would say “The picture has too much green in it. Will you fix it?”

This would go on all day, every day all summer long. That’s why it fascinates me when my own kids tell me how hard they have it today. Everything it a click away, but that seems to be too far to reach for them. JD

Gringo Masks for Arizona Illegal Aliens

I guess its okay to say offensive things to people providing that the people are white. The wabsite is called gringomask.com. People need to go to this site to see what blatant racism is. These people are racists and the media ran this story as a comedy piece. JD

Main Entry: grin·go
Pronunciation: \ˈgriŋ-(ˌ)gō\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural gringos
Etymology: Spanish, alteration of griego Greek, stranger, from Latin Graecus Greek
Date: 1849

often disparaging : a foreigner in Spain or Latin America especially when of English or American origin; broadly : a non-Hispanic person

Thats right! A company in Miami has created the “Gringo Mask” to help fool the cops in Arizona. If you are looking for a way to beat Arizona’s new immigration law, look no further than Miami’s new Gringo Masks.

The new product, brainchild of Miami advertising agency Zubi Advertising, guarantees the cops won’t be stopping you or your loved ones after you put your best white face forward.

The product is simple. Choose from a cut out of a blue-eyed, sandy hair-colored white guy or a green-eyed, blond haired white woman.

Cut the face to fit yours. Poke out the eyes. And presto! You don’t look like a “suspicious, potentially illegal” alien. Rubber band or green card not included.

The Gringo Mask was not created for profit, says Zubi execs, but for purpose. It’s one of the nation’s leading Hispanic advertising agency’s ways of showing it disapproves of Arizona’s new law.

“When we first heard of the law in Arizona and the effects it could have in terms of racial profiling, we discussed at the agency what we could do about it, since we have access to media,” co-owner Michelle Zubizarreta told the Sun-Sentinel. “How can we address the issue, but do so in a creative way while at the same time delivering a message?”

Now we could see how some might find the mask offensive – kind of along the lines of the infamous “Illegal alien with green card” Halloween costume of last year.

But Zubizarreta and her brother, Joe, said with traditional protests like marches and boycotts already in full swing, the Gringo Mask was another direct way of getting the message across.

“The spirit in which we conceived Gringo Mask,” Zubizarreta said, “was not to offend anyone. We wanted to start a dialogue.”

The Gringo Mask, along with instructions in Spanish and English, can be found at www.gringomask.com

No Latinos, No Tacos, Electronic road signs hacked

Electronic road sign hackers generally like to warn motorists of zombie and raptor attacks, but in South Florida, the signs are apparently being used to fuel the immigration debate.

A highway sign flashing “NO LATINOS NO TACOS” greeted drivers on the Palmetto Expressway in Northwest Miami-Dade, after hackers managed to alter it early Tuesday morning.

The sign was in the northbound side of the 826, right near the Northwest 25th street exit.

It’s unknown how long the sign had been flashing the message, but by 6 a.m., members of the Florida Highway Patrol and a road crew had turned the sign away from the highway and were working to erase the message.

Officials said the signs are password protected, but that generally does little to stop hackers intent on changing them.

Last year, a string of road sign hacks were made in three separate states.

In Austin, Texas, a sign cautioned drivers to the “ZOMBIES IN AREA! RUN.” Another in Collinsville, Illinois said “Daily LANE CLOSURES DUE TO ZOMBIES.” And another in rural Indiana read “RAPTORS AHEAD – CAUTION.”

Reaction to the sign, posted on the “Today in South Florida” Facebook page was mixed.

“Wow someone has a lot of time on their hands to think up of how they can belittle and disrespect a group of people who help keep this country going,” said Luly Cueto-Belot.

“Greatest thing I ever saw…let’s take this country back dammit!!!..south will rise again mother—er!!” said David Pines.
