27 Arrested In New Jersey Apartment Complex Where 7-Year-Old Was Gang Raped

Huffingtonpost.com

Police ramped up their investigation Thursday into the case of a 7-year-old girl who they say was gang-raped by a group of men while her 15-year-old stepsister watched and got paid for it.

Police conducted a pre-dawn raid at the troubled public housing complex, a high-rise apartment building so dangerous that officers are hired as security guards at night. They arrested a 20-year-old Trenton man on charges he had sex with the teenager in one of the apartments.

Gregory Joseph Leary was booked Wednesday night on charges of statutory rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Under New Jersey law, the 15-year-old is too young to consent to sex.

Leary was being held Thursday in jail on a $200,000 cash bond. Jail officials said Leary does not have a listed attorney.

Police said they are investigating whether Leary was involved with the rape of the 7-year-old at a party Sunday night in the apartment complex down the street from the Statehouse.

On Thursday morning, police arrested 27 people on unrelated outstanding warrants during a sweep of Rowan Towers. Trenton police Capt. Joseph Juniak said the raid was planned before the girl’s attack but that it was “somewhat beneficial for investigators” looking into the child rape.

Many of those arrested Thursday were women who told The Associated Press the warrants were for minor infractions.

Residents said the assault was clearly at the forefront of police officers’ agenda during the raid.

Tair Rivers, 27, said officers yelled, “What happened to the little girl?” as they arrested her for outstanding parking tickets.

Rivers lives in 13-H, an apartment right across from 13-C, where the party occurred. She said she was not home over the weekend but would not hesitate to tell police if she knew something.

“We all got kids,” River said. “If we knew something, we would tell.”

Police believe as many as a dozen people were at the party and said everyone in the apartment when the rape occurred could be legally culpable.

At the party, the 15-year-old starting having sex with several men for money and then gave the younger girl some cash to let a group of men touch her as she looked on, police said. It soon escalated to rape and the men threatened to kill the child if she screamed or told anyone, according to police.

Police are reviewing surveillance videos at the complex.

According to police, the teenager and the 7-year-old were outside in the neighborhood Sunday when the older girl ran into two young men she knew who invited her to the party. The 7-year-old wanted to tag along because she was worried about the older girl’s safety.

The girl later put on her clothes and left the apartment; her older sister stayed. Two women found the child crying outside the apartment and walked her home.

The teenager’s name was not released because of her age, but the county prosecutor plans to ask the court to try her as an adult. It was not clear who was representing the girl in juvenile court.

Interstate Realty Management Company, which manages the 15-story building, said about 150 people live there, and many of the apartments are vacant.

The raid Thursday sends a message, Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer said.

“This is only the beginning,” Palmer said. “We’re not going to rest until that area is cleaned up so that decent people can live without the threat of fear and violence.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday called the incident “deplorable” in his first public comments on the crime that occurred in the shadow of the New Jersey Statehouse.

OBAMA TELLS CRITICS: TONE IT DOWN… CRITICS TELL OBAMA TO BLOW HOT SAND OUT OF HIS BACKSIDE

President Obama . . . can you believe this guy? Obama and the democrats in Washington just forced one of the most unpopular pieces of legislation in US history down the throats of Americans, and he wants the opposition to tone it down?

A pertinent question here would be, if the shoe was on the other foot, would the democrats and the liberal media tone it down? The answer is a resounding Hell no.

Why then should a MAJORITY of Americans that are opposed to nationalized medicine not be allowed to voice their opposition?

We have all watched as democrats and the media have tried to portray the Tea Party Movement as a bunch of angry racists for daring to oppose President Obama and his socialist agenda. When this tactic blew up in their faces, they decided to attack Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

Perhaps Obama and the democrats (sounds like a punk rock band name) should try to understand that when you have a bill that has at best 30 percent of the people supporting it, and you pass it anyway against the will of your constituents, this is the end result.

We should all remember Obama’s campaign slogans. Primarily, “The age of divisive politics is over.” Remember how Obama told us that he was going to unite Washington politicians for common goals that benefit all Americans? I guess not.

Obama has been the most divisive president that I can remember in my 48 years on this planet.

I say it here and now. You are a liar President Obama. You have lied to the American people and you have sold us a bill of goods. You are not uniting America, you are dividing it into a nation of serfs that are here only to serve Washington politicians. Enjoy your stay in Washington, because there isn’t a doubt in my mind that you will be a one term president.

Shaun Rogers of Cleveland Browns busted for bringing loaded gun into airport

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers was arrested Thursday at Hopkins International Airport for carrying a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage.

Rogers, who had been at the team’s suburban training facility in recent days, was stopped at a security checkpoint when officials spotted a loaded .45-caliber hand gun in his carry-on luggage, police said in a statement. He was arrested at 12:15 p.m. without incident and was booked for carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony.

No charges have been filed at this time, police said. Under Ohio law, a third-degree felony carries a penalty of probation to five years in prison.

It’s not yet known what Rogers, who lives in Houston during the offseason, told officials about the gun or if he was traveling alone.

Browns president Mike Holmgren issued a statement saying the team was aware of Rogers’ arrest.

“We will continue to gather additional information, and until the legal process has taken its course, we will reserve any further comment,” the statement said.

A message seeking comment was left with Rogers’ agent, Kennard McGuire.

Rogers, a three-time Pro Bowler who has played two seasons with the Browns, missed Cleveland’s final five games last season after breaking his leg on Nov. 29 against Cincinnati.

Tom Bennett, Climber found dead on Mt. Shasta

MOUNT SHASTA, CA.– An Oakland man who fell ill after he and a climbing partner reached the top of Mount Shasta was found dead today in a snow cave near the summit, officials said.

Tom Bennett, 26, was found at 9:15 a.m. in the cave where his climbing partner left him Saturday after Bennett began suffering from altitude sickness and fell unconscious, officials said.

Bennett, a chemical engineer, and 26-year-old Mark Thomas of Berkeley set out to climb the mountain March 25 and reached the 14,162-foot summit Saturday, Thomas told officials.

He said that after the pair began their descent, Bennett suffered sudden and extreme symptoms of altitude sickness and became unresponsive within minutes.

Rather than try to carry Bennett, Thomas said, he carved a snow cave for his partner and left him with water, candy bars and granola, then hiked down the mountain in whiteout conditions to get help.

Officials said today that rescue workers who were flown up the mountain in a Chinook helicopter had found the snow cave easily with the help of an avalanche marker that Thomas left. Attempts earlier this week to search by air for Bennett had been frustrated by bad weather.

Bennett’s family was at the Weed airport when rescue workers radioed they had located his body, said Susan Gravenkamp, spokeswoman for the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

The body was airlifted from the mountain and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of Bennett’s death.
