Luge competitor dies in horrific crash at Olympics

Georgian luge hopeful Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed Friday in a crash after flying off the Olympic track in Whistler, Canada during a training run, the Toronto Sun reported.

The 21-year-old, who was knocked unconscious, was immediately placed on a stretcher before he was taken away in an ambulance.

“Georgian slider Nodar Kumaritashvili has had a serious crash in the final run of official training for the men’s singles on Friday,” said an official statement.

“The 21-year-old fell out of the track when he crashed. He was treated onsite by medical staff who administered CPR and was then taken away in an ambulance.”

The Globe and Mail newspaper reported Kumaritashvili was “near the bottom and fastest part of the track when he hit one side of the wall, crashed into the other, and was then thrown off his sled and over the wall. He appeared to hit a metal pole on the side of the track after he was thrown over the wall.”

Russ Leach, Riverside Police Chief to retired amid investigation

So let me get this straight. Police Chief Russ Leach was at a Super Bowl Party, left the party and crashed his car into a light pole, and Leach wants us to believe that it was caused by his prescription medication? Right. More beer is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year. I suppose that Chief Leach was drinking sodas all day, right? Exactly what kind of official business was being conducted at this Super Bowl party to make it necessary for Chief Leach to drive a city vehicle to the party? This thing stinks to high heaven. JD

Riverside Police Department Chief Russ Leach retired today amid an investigation into a crash involving a city-owned vehicle he was driving, possibly while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The Riverside City Manager’s Office released a statement this afternoon saying Leach, 61, was retiring for medical reasons, effective immediately.

Leach, who was hired in 2000, had been on medical leave since Monday.

On Tuesday, city officials said Leach was involved in a single-vehicle crash around 3 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Central and Hillside avenues.

The black Chrysler 300 apparently jumped the curb and hit a fire hydrant and light pole, destroying both tires on the vehicle’s left side, which sustained major front-end damage.

Leach drove another three miles before being pulled over by a Riverside police patrol unit, The Press-Enterprise reported.

A six-page collision report filed by the officers who conducted the traffic stop indicated that Leach had been drinking, according to the paper.

Leach told The Press-Enterprise that prescription medication he was taking contributed to the accident.

“I don’t have a full memory of this,” Leach told The Press-Enterprise. “But I take absolute full responsibility for what happened.”

Leach would not say whether he had been drinking, or disclose what medication he is taking, which is connected to a back injury and other ailments, according to the newspaper.

The California Highway Patrol was asked by Assistant Riverside Police Chief John De La Rosa to investigate Monday’s crash.

A final report is expected to be issued next week, according to CHP Lt. David Lane of the agency’s Inland Division.

Lane said a CHP accident investigation team was trying to locate witnesses and verify details of what occurred, without relying solely on information provided by the Riverside Police Department.

“We’re investigating this as we would any other collision, starting from square one,” Lane told City News Service.

“This is an independent investigation. Therefore, we’re not going to take reports from another agency
and say, ‘OK, that’s what happened.’”

Luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili in horrific crash at Olympics

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili has been seriously injured in an Olympic training run.

He was coming around the final 270-degree turn, where speeds approach 140 km/h, when he flipped off his sled and was hurled into a metal pole. He appeared to hit his head.

Medics administered CPR to the 21-year-old from Borjomi, Georgia, before he was lifted into an ambulance. An air-rescue helicopter arrived some eight minutes after the crash.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

Training was suspended indefinitely. Members of the International Luge Federation were called for a briefing and team captains from each nation were asked to attend a meeting.

At the finish area, not far from the crash, athletes, coaches and officials awaited word on Kumaritashvili.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Shiva Keshavan, a four-time Olympian from India. “I’m afraid it’s bad.”

Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.

The $105-million sliding centre, on the southeast face of Blackcomb Mountain, has been billed as a wild ride and the accident happened at its fastest point.

The 1,450-metre course has 16 turns and drops steeply for 152 metres, the longest drop of any track in the world.

The average grade is about 11 per cent, including two stomach-inverting drops of 20 per cent.

It was the second crash of the day on the course after defending Olympic champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy lost control on the lower part of the track. He didn’t appear to be injured. On Thursday, Romanian women’s slider Violeta Stramaturaru crashed and had to be airlifted out.

More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training, with a Romanian woman briefly knocked unconscious.

Los Angeles Landmark Philippe’s restaurant closed because of cockroach infestation

Philippe the Original, a venerable Los Angeles eatery famous for its juicy French dip sandwiches, has been shut down by county health inspectors because of a cockroach infestation, officials said Thursday evening.

Health inspectors discovered the problem about 11 a.m. Wednesday after conducting an inspection prompted by citizens’ complaints, said Angelo Bellomo, director of environmental health for the Los Angeles County Public Health Department.

He said the restaurant typically receives high scores during routine inspections. County inspectors conducted such an inspection Wednesday, in addition to the probe based on the complaint, and the business scored in the low 90s, Bellomo said.

But inspectors had to close the restaurant for 48 hours to allow the vermin to be removed.

“When you have a violation like a live cockroach infestation, it doesn’t matter how good the score is,” Bellomo said.

He said health inspectors plan to return Friday morning and the restaurant could be open by noon.

A worker at the restaurant Thursday evening said that the management was not available for comment.

Known simply as Philippe’s, the restaurant has been operating for more than 100 years. The business has been at its current location on North Alameda Street near Union Station since 1951, according to its website.
