Fontana dog attack victim on life support, dogs attack family

Anytime I go for a bike ride or a run, I avoid Fontana for this very reason. There is this idea that if you have an attack dog, you have a higher status in the neighborhood. Once while riding my bike on a bike trail, three dogs began to chase me. If I had been on foot I would have been finished. JD
A 5-year-old girl who was mauled by a pack of dogs Monday in Fontana remained on life support in a hospital this morning, police said.
The girl was transferred from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center to another hospital, said Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker.
“As of last night she was on a ventilator,” Decker said. “She had bite injuries to her face, back, head and legs. She also has a broken rib cage and a punctured lung. She is in extremely bad shape.”
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. while a woman and her four children were walking along some railroad tracks on Tokay Avenue south of Arrow Highway.
Five dogs escaped a yard through holes in a fence and attacked the child and two of her siblings. One of the dogs tore the 5-year-old girl away from her mother during the attack.
The dogs attacked the girl’s 7-year-old brother, chewing off part of one of his legs, Decker said. The third child, who is 8-years-old, also suffered leg injuries.
One of the dogs charged a Fontana police officer who arrived at the scene. The dog was shot and killed.
Police have not made any arrests, but did contact the owners of the dogs.
“They voluntarily gave the dogs up to us,” Decker said. “My understanding is they are very sorry about what happened.”
The dogs are being kept by the San Bernardino City Animal Control Shelter.
Decker said police are looking into the possibility of citing the owners for violating a city ordinance pertaining to keeping animals adequately secured on a property. Officers are also checking into possible criminal charges.

I live in Fontana and support animal rights. I have 3 dogs and know that accidents happen. My heart goes out to the kids and the owners. No one ever expects something like this to happen as dog owners. You must see things from both perspectives. Don't be ignorant please.
I suppose if those were your kids maybe you would speak differently. I had a pit bull growing up and he had to be put down, because he was too aggressive. That is not how we raised him. But because he was bred for aggression from the owners, which we were not aware of, this side of him came out, and had to put him down. My husband had a red nose pitty for 13 years, she was the most loving dof, but to this day he still says he would never trust her around young children, especially because of her breed.
I had a business that required me to go in and out of backyards all day long. I have seen them all. Pits, Rots, dobies etc. Most dogs will let you know if you are welcome or not. Some will bark and growl, but they will yield at your advance. Cesar Milan actually shows this on his "Dog Whisperer" TV show. Most dogs will leave you alone providing that you ignore their behavior. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Most of the time in my business, it was Dalmations that were the meanest animals I had ever encountered. When a pack of five angry dogs comes at you, you are most certainly doomed.
I bet 3 dogs is the limit for Fontana's ordinance.
What the hell were they doing with 5 dogs?
They knew not to have so many dogs beyond what they could handle…
I'm sure they were aware of a spay/neuter option but chose to make the excuse of "can't afford it" and continued to let their junkyard mutt dogs breed.. after seeing picts of the dogs being of mutt breeds and NOT pitbulls
NO animal is to be trusted around childred wholeheartedly, especially unsupervised…
that's why we're supposed to SUPERVISE them!
Besides, you're believing too much into the myths of pitbulls and not helping the breed any…
