Why do people of mixed race (black and white) always adopt the black half of their culture? Is it because they look more black than white? I don’t think this is the case because actually they usually don’t look like either. They are in a class all their own. They are called mulatto.
For those of you are are too young or too ignorant to know what this word means and have automatically given it a racist connotation I have provided the Merriam Websters definition of the word below;
\mə-ˈla-(ˌ)tō, mu̇-, myu̇-, -ˈlä-\
plural mu·lat·toes or mu·lat·tos
Spanish mulato, from mulo mule, from Latin mulus
1 : the first-generation offspring of a black person and a white person
2 : a person of mixed white and black ancestry
This is what Barack Obama is. A Mulatto. He is not African American. In fact I don’t believe that anyone that was born here is anything more than an American. Nothing more. A while back I read an article that most “African American” kids in high school couldn’t point to Africa on a world map. But most could point to America. Interesting indeed, but I digress.
I remember watching Halle Berry accepting the Academy Award for Monsters Ball. Her mother, Judith Ann Hawkins was sitting there in the crowd while Ms. Berry ignored her white ancestry and would only acknowledge her black ancestry. I cannot understand how parents of a mulatto child would let their child do that.
I live next door to a mixed race couple and the have two beautiful mulatto children. We had talked the next day about the Halle Berry incident the night before on the Academy awards and the flurry of media attention it received the next day. Thee headlines blared “Halle Berry first African American woman to win the Academy Award.” I showed it to my neighbors as I was picking up the paper in the front yard. Harold, a black man said “what about her white mom?” His wife Kathy ( a white woman and Harold’s wife) said “I would kill my kids if they dissed me like that.”
My point in all of this is that mulatto people are not African American. Mulatto people are mulatto people. Obama is one of these people. Plain and simple. You can’t pick one or the other because you are neither. It doesn’t work that way. An Amerasian person can’t say “well even though I am white and Japanese, I will only acknowledge the Japanese part of me.” Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it?
I cannot think of any other race of people that do this. My theory is that the reason some people do this is because it gives them the ability to take advantage of the system, IE easy scholarships, affirmative action positions, etc. If I were Halle Berry or Barack Obama I would be ashamed of myself for perpetrating such a fraud on my friends, family and the American public.
