This is typical liberal use of a well armed military. Sending troops to areas of civil war, strife and conflict to stop “suffering” and quell uprisings. To hell with America. Who do we think we are as a nation? Trying to defend ourselves from terrorists and foreign invaders. Nonsense!!! We should be running around the planet helping the needy, staving masses.

Darfur is yet another example of a military action created by the media. The Hollywood elite along with the media have made this an issue from day one. It’s exactly what is wrong with the American media today. They will bash the Iraq issue DAILY, but they will CONDONE actions in Darfur and other shitbox nations so long as the end justifies the means. Now lets watch as they bury news of U.N. casualties on page A-349 so no one will be clamoring for the military to get out of Darfur. JD

After many months of frustration and delay, the UN last night authorised the deployment of an intervention force of up to 26,000 UN and African peacekeepers in Darfur in a fresh attempt to halt the conflict and suffering in the impoverished region.

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution sponsored jointly by Britain and France and submitted late on Monday, giving a green light to the force, just hours after Gordon Brown delivered an impassioned speech at UN headquarters in which he hailed the move.

“Today is an important decision day for Darfur, and for change,” Mr Brown told the audience following a meeting with Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general. During talks with President George Bush on Monday, he also stressed the need to end the Darfur crisis. He used the occasion to issue a blunt warning to the Sudanese government, which has repeatedly stonewalled on sending sufficient troops to quell rebel activity in the region, not to stand in the way of the force.

“We must be clear: if any party blocks progress and the killings continue, I and others will redouble our efforts to impose further sanctions, ” he said. “I am not prepared to let this tragedy continue without action.”

The use of African Union (AU) soldiers in the operation was one of the conditions sought by the government in Khartoum, which has received much of the blame for the conflict that has claimed more than 200,000 lives and displaced as many as 2.1 million.

Diplomats expect the mission to cost as much as $2bn (£1bn). China was concerned about the resolution because it includes provisions under Chapter 7 of the UN charter for the troops to use force to defend UN and humanitarian workers to ensure the freedom of movement of personnel trying to ease the population’s suffering. Mr Ban called the force’s task a ” historic and unprecedented operation” that will send “a clear and powerful signal” of help to the people of Darfur.

And in a statement issued shortly after the Security Council approved the force, Bernard Kouchner, the French Foreign Minister, pressed for the rapid deployment of the force and full co-operation from all sides, particularly the Sudanese government.

He said: “This is a heavy and difficult task that demands the full mobilisation of the international community” supporting the UN and AU, Kouchner said.

“This will also demand unreserved co-operation of all parties to the crisis, in particular the government of Sudan,” the statement said. The “hybrid” force is to replace a 7,000-strong AU force no later than 31 December. The new force, hailed by as the world’s biggest peacekeeping operation, would involve 19,555 troops and about 6,000 police units.

Millions of refugees have been forced into eastern Chad and elsewhere, and M. Kouchner urged action to resolve the consequences of the Darfur crisis, suggesting that eastern Chad and north-east Central African Republic be likewise secured.

Emyr Jones Parry, the UK’s ambassador to the UN, called it “an unprecedented undertaking in scale, complexity and importance”.

The conflict began in February 2003 when ethnic African tribes rebelled against what they consider decades of neglect and discrimination by the Arab-dominated government. Sudan’s government is accused of retaliating by unleashing a militia of Arab nomads known as the janjaweed a charge it denies.

The poorly equipped and under-funded AU force has been unable to stop the fighting, and neither has the Darfur Peace Agreement, signed a year ago by the government and one rebel group. Other rebel factions called the deal insufficient and fighting has continued.

NGOs including Oxfam and Christian Aid cautiously welcomed the move. but warned about delays to deployment.

mug shot alcoholic coke whore Lindsay Lohan

LOS ANGELES – Actress and alcoholic coke whore Lindsay Lohan, wearing an alcohol-monitoring bracelet from her last stint in rehab, was arrested for the second time in a month on Tuesday, accused of drunken driving and drug possession after a bizarre, predawn car chase, police said.

The 21-year-old coke whore, who moonlights as a stripper, already faces a drunken-driving charge following a car crash in Beverly Hills two months ago.

She was taken into custody in the coastal city of Santa Monica about 1:30 a.m. and was released from jail after posting $25,000 bond, according to police. She is due back in court for arraignment in both cases on August 24. She must also answer to prostitution charges at that time.

Lohan’s lawyer issued a statement hours later saying the actress had suffered a relapse and she was ‘presently receiving medical care.’

Her apparent return to rehab forced the cancellation of a planned guest television appearance Tuesday on NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,’ where she was to have promoted her new movie and dance topless for Jay Leno, a spokeswoman for the show said.

Shooting on her next film, ‘Poor Things,’ starring and produced by Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine, has been delayed since late May to accommodate Lohan’s substance abuse treatment and herpes treatment, a source close to the production told Reuters.

Police said they encountered the actress in a parking lot after the mother of Lohan’s personal assistant called them on her cell phone to report she was being pursued by Lohan in an automobile. Police Lt. Alex Padilla said at a news conference the assistant had just quit her job hours earlier.

‘AFRAID’ OF LOHAN

‘(Lohan) was trying to catch the mother of her personal assistant. Why she was trying to catch her, we don’t know,’ Padilla said. ‘The mother was afraid. … She called the police because she wanted to make sure everything would be OK.’

Padilla said Lohan was accompanied in her sports utility vehicle by two friends, who were questioned and released.

Lohan was detained after failing a field sobriety test. Police said she later registered a blood-alcohol level of about 0.12 percent, well above the California limit of 0.08.

The actress was booked on suspicion of drunken driving, cocaine possession, bringing a controlled substance into custody and driving on a suspended license. Padilla said a small amount of cocaine was found in her pants pocket during the booking process.

Just last Friday, Lohan turned herself in to Beverly Hills police to face charges of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident in connection with a May 26 car crash.

In that case, she lost control of her Mercedes-Benz sports car, drove into a hedge, then left the scene. At the time, police said they found a small amount of what they believed was cocaine in the car.

The crash in May led Lohan to check herself into a rehab center for the second time in a year. She left earlier this month after 45 days and was wearing an alcohol-monitoring bracelet on a voluntary basis, her spokeswoman said.

Padilla said she was still wearing the ankle bracelet when arrested on Tuesday morning.

‘Unfortunately, late yesterday, I was informed that Lindsay had relapsed,’ her attorney, Blair Berk, said in a statement. ‘The bracelet has now been removed. She is safe, out of custody and presently receiving medical care.’

Meanwhile, producers of ‘Poor Things’ said they planned to announce ‘details on a start date for movie in the very near future.’ There was no immediate word on whether Lohan would remain in the cast.

Hank Aaron
While watching the Jackie Robinson tribute game here in Los Angeles hosted by the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium I was lucky enough to hear Hank Aaron make a statement about the current trend in professional baseball to scout players form the Dominican Republic and the decline of the number of African Americans in baseball. He said, and I quote, ” There must be some kinda conspiracy at work here. The number of African American players is now at 8 %. It’s just criminal.”

Aside from how incredibly inflammatory I found that particular remark, I also found it incredibly stupid. Is it possible that Mr. Aaron is naive enough to believe that nonsense? Or is he just that stupid?

Has it ever occurred to old Hank that perhaps there just aren’t that many black kids going out for baseball anymore? After all, baseball tries to project a clean wholesome image. It is after all the “Great American Pastime.” Simply put, it just ain’t ghetto enough for black people.

Statistically the numbers don’t lie. Baseball comes in third place in black households, behind football and basketball. The last recorded number I could find from The Nielsen Media Research Group said that only 23% of black households watch baseball. Less then one quarter of black households even watch the sport. If you compare that to basketball, 78 % watch. Football 73 %. So there is no conspiracy at work here. It just not a big sport anymore with the black population here in America.

I would like to ask Hank Aaron and Gary Sheffield (Detroit Tigers) a question. What kind of conspiracy is at work in Basketball? Or for that matter Football? I don’t know the numbers, but looking right now at my beloved Los Angeles Lakers roster, I see that eleven players are black. One is Ukrainian and three are white? Is there a conspiracy at work in the NBA? Or could it be that blacks are simply better at basketball than whites? Is that a bigoted statement? NO!!!

One more question for these two knuckle heads. Why does color matter in the first place. I will quote Dr. Martin Luther King here when he said ” I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Another favorite passage of mine from the very same speech ” I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.”

I guess Mr. Sheffield and Mr. Aaron are so blinded by their own bigotry that they forgot those words. Character. Something these two idiots don’t seem to possess. JD

The Fairness Doctrine

The Fairness Doctrine. Did I wake up and find myself in some communist country? Can you imagine the nerve of people like congressman Dennis Kucinich, that think that the way you make things fair in America is to silence those that don’t think like you? Someone should get a stick and poke at that squirrel on Dennis’ head and see if its dead.

Earth to Dennis, earth to Dennis. Wake up you simple son of a bitch. This is America. Land of the free. Home of the brave. One of these days you liberal assholes will wake up and realize that LIFE isn’t fair. It’s not supposed to be fair. Contrary to liberal beliefs, most people work their asses off to succeed in life. They don’t just wake up one day and they are wealthy.

This all goes back to talk radio and the AMNESTY bill those ass wipes back in Washington were trying to ram down our throats. Locally here in Los Angeles we have “The John and Ken Show” heard on KFI AM 640 … “More stimulating talk radio” I love these guys. They say it like it is. Quite frankly, they say what most people think but are too afraid to say.

Well John and Ken told everyone to call their elected officials and complain about the fact that the MAJORITY of Americans don’t want another amnesty. So people called. They exercized their God given right to voice an opinion. Unfortunately for the elected officials, it was an opposing opinion. The Amnesty bill crashed and burned.

So what is the liberal response? To try to silence free speech. They call it “The Fairness Doctrine” but in reality it is nothing more then a way to silence the masses and continue on the trail to a third world America. An America modeled after that shit box 120 miles south of me called MEXICO.

Let me explain something to you liberal dipshits out there. Talk radio is popular because we are all stuck in our cars four hours a day in traffic. Why is there traffic? Because for fifty years you liberal idiots have been busy trying to make America a socialist mecca that pays for every fat piece of shit that is too lazy to get a job instead of building infrastructure. You want fairness on talk radio BUILD MORE FREEWAYS ASSHOLE!!!

It’s really quite ironic. The working stiffs that get out of bed every day and face the traffic grind and pay our taxes are always the ones taking it in the tail pipe. Out here in Los Angeles it takes three hours to drive 40 miles. So people stuck in traffic have nothing but time on their hands and they do two things. Get pissed off about the traffic and listen to talk radio.

And talk radio is saying what these people want to hear. It help us vent our frustration with a government that seems to care more about derelict mexicans then U.S. citizens. Its a fact. You want to piss people off, just mention amnesty. See what happens. Those assholes in Washington or so out of touch with what America thinks that they thought that the amnesty bill would be a slam dunk.

Note to all political hacks. You can’t base public opinion on polling data. You need to come back to your districts and make yourselves accessible tot your constituents. Listen to our concerns. Also, we live in a country that has a “REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT.” You are there to represent your constituents. Nothing more. What you think doesn’t matter. You were elected to do the bidding of your constituents. To represent our concerns in Washington. Now do your job and shut the fuck up! JD

So I work a lot. So much in fact that I hardly have any time to watch television. When I do watch television its usually quite late at night. I was flipping through the cable channels last night and I saw this show called ” Dog, The Bounty Hunter. ” I had heard of this show only because of news stories about him being arrested for “bounty hunting” illegally in Mexico, which I found ironic because as far as I knew nothing was illegal in Mexico. But I’ll save that for another time.

I must say that it was probably the funniest thing I have seen a long time. First of all, what double wide did they find this guy in? What’s up with that hair? He should sue the person that did that to him. And he wears all that crap in his hair and those dopey arm bands. What the hell is that?

He looks like he should be in the band “Molly Hatchet.” If that fat dopey SOB came up to me with his tazer and paint ball gun I would just punch him on top of that big mushy belly of his and tear his aorta and watch him bleed out in thirty seconds. And what about those paint ball guns. Sure they hurt, but so does a .45 slug to the brain. And that’s what this guy will get if he keeps thinking he is some sort of “force to be reckoned with.”

One day they are going to kick in the wrong door and someone will bust a cap in his backside. If I were a criminal and he came running in my ghetto ass apartment and told me to get on the ground, I would giggle my ass off just based on that stupid mullet he sports. Not to mention that he appears old enough to begin the fossilization process.

On to his wife. Beth Chapman. So did they have a fire sale at Wal-Mart, or what? What’s up with those clothes? She looks like a street walking prostitute that’s smuggling two illegal immigrants under her sweater. Nice jugs Dolly. Are those real or did you steal the ass of J-LO and put those ginormous butt cheeks on your chest and call them tits? Nice trailer trash look sweetie.

And what’s up with your hair? Platinum blonde? Shit, trust me when I say this. The carpet doesn’t match the drapes on that one. You wear your make-up all wrong and your clothes are from circa nineteen eighty … er … Flash Dance. Jennifer Beal is rolling over in the grave of what used to be her career when she sees you. Take a tip from me, honey. Loose 80 pounds. When your driving in your car you look like a blonde Mama Cass Elliott.

I don’t know why your husband … er … what’s his name? Elvis??? Why doesn’t he send you in first. I would bet money the criminals your after would pass out in fear of your enormous girth as you waddled through the door. If not you could simply beat them to death with J-LO’s ass …. er ….. your jugs.

Anyway, it was fun watching. Why people fear these idiots is beyond me. Come knock on my door, mother fucker. I’ll answer with Mr. SigArms and his 15 friends from the .40 caliber family. JD

The head line for this article should read ” Media Incites Hysteria Over Steam Blast” Now there is no good reason people should be afraid to go outside because of the steam pipe rupture. But the media will run stories for the next few days trying to make people believe that there is a health threat just so they have something to write about.

Here is how it works. They will run stories on the prime time news shows and the next morning in the papers about how there may be a health risk, in this instance because the pipes were made from asbestos. Then the next day they will send out their big heads to interview people about the health threat posed by asbestos. After asking about a million people, they will find two or three that actually believe the lies propagated in the original story. Then they put that on the news and say that “Many people are very concerned” when in reality most people don’t give two shits.

The use adjectives like “many” because it means “being one of a large but indefinite number.” Make note of the word “indefinite.” This way they can lead you to believe that the vast majority are all afraid of the health risks when in reality it may be just a few. Realistically speaking, most New Yorkers probably don’t give two shits about the health affects. Most New Yorkers are only concerned what the “Steam Blast” is going to mean for their rush hour commute across town when they go to work. JD

NEW YORK — New Yorkers are still questioning their air’s safety after a steam pipe eruption spewed dirt and debris into the sky over midtown. Many remember the cover-up after the last major pipe rupture and the illnesses ground zero workers faced years after officials assured them lower Manhattan was safe.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday declared the air free of asbestos, saying “every single test” showed no asbestos in the air. Other city officials were unwavering in that assessment, as well.

Yet, the painful legacy of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was evident among area residents and workers.

The debris from Wednesday’s rupture was nothing close to the scale of the twin towers’ collapse, but the sight of police in filtration masks and the warnings to area residents to keep windows closed and to throw out any clothing touched by dust or debris added to people’s fears.

“I take everything with a grain of salt. I would like to believe it, but I can’t,” said Ariana Reines, an English teacher who returned to her school on a block of Lexington Avenue that was closed off after Wednesday evening’s rupture.

Many of the city’s older steam pipes are lined with asbestos, a carcinogen that can cause serious illnesses with longterm exposure. The dust and debris churned up when the 83-year-old pipe burst showed some signs of asbestos on the ground; officials said 14 of 56 debris samples tested positive, though most had only trace amounts.

A deadly 1989 rupture of another steam pipe near Manhattan’s Gramercy Park also spewed asbestos _ a fact utility Con Ed later admitted it had concealed for days while residents were exposed.

Andrew Troisi, spokesman for the Office of Emergency Management, said the city agency encouraged people to stay away from the area of Wednesday’s blast as a precaution and that it believed long-term health problems from the rupture were “unlikely.”

“All indications are that there are no airborne contaminants, and furthermore, exposure to asbestos over a short period of time is not dangerous,” he said.

Police officers wore respiration masks in the “frozen zone” _ a three-square-block area around the explosion crater that was closed to traffic and pedestrians. Most passers-by, though, had nothing to filter the air.

“I don’t know anybody here who’s going out to lunch,” said attorney Jordan Fox, who was working a block from the rupture site and has been involved in asbestos cases. “It’s musty out there _ it’s humid, and the air is kind of thick. That could keep the asbestos entrained in the air.”

“They lied to us on Sept. 11 and thereafter. It’s clear they misrepresented exposure after 9/11,” Fox said. “A lot of people would ask, ‘Why should we trust them now?’”

Michaeel Vick. The worlds dumbest human

Well ladies and gentleman, After years of scouring the globe, we here at brokencountry think we have finally found him … THE WORLD DUMBEST HUMAN!!!

Meet Michael Vick. For those off you that at such colossal geeks and are too busy to stop looking at porno long enough to do anything that might be remotely considered normal, Michael Vick is a QUARTERBACK in the NFL. He plays for a team named the ATLANTA FALCONS.

This fucking retard is a millionaire about thirty times over. He makes a base salary of six million a year plus bonus and incentive money that could reap as much as twenty million a year. The irony of the previous statement is that Mr. Vick isn’t really that good.

So what makes Michael Vick THE WORLDS DUMBEST HUMAN? He has been busy for the last six years running an illegal dog fighting club. Not only that. The indictment handed down yesterday by a grand jury accuses Mr. Vick of torturing the animals to death if they lose the fight.

Methods used included but were not limited to death by electrocution, hanging and shooting the animals for not performing up to Mr. Vick’s expectations. What a lunatic.

So lets review. We have a millionaire quarterback that for all intents and purposes has the world on a string and he’s sitting on a rainbow. We have illegal dog fights. We have extraordinarily inhumane treatment of animals. I will say it here because those in the media are too cowardly to say it themselves … YOU CAN TAKE THE BOY FROM THE GHETTO, BUT YOU CAN’T TAKE THE GHETTO OUT OF THE MAN! JD

The Atlanta Falcons have insisted the news that star quarterback Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a dog fighting probe will not derail their pre-season plans.

Vick has been indicted for conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities, as well as to sponsor a dog in animal fighting venture by a US District Court for the Eastern District in Richmond, Virginia, according to a report on ESPN.com.

The report also stated that three others – Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips and Tony Taylor – were also indicted by the grand jury on the same charges.

The Falcons released a statement on Tuesday night apologising to the team’s fans about the situation and insisting business would carry on as normal despite the charges hanging over Vick’s head.

It read: “Obviously, we are disturbed by the news from Virginia.

“However, we are prepared to deal with it and we will do the right thing for our club as the legal process plays out.

“We have a season to prepare for and training camp opens next week. Our plan is to continue to do everything we can to support our players and coaches.

“This situation has been troubling to many people, including our fans, during the last few months.

“With the news, our club and team will continue to be tested as Michael works through the legal process toward a conclusion.

“We are disappointed that one of our players and therefore the Falcons is being presented to the public in a negative way, and we apologise to our fans and the community for that.”

Dog fighting is illegal throughout America and a felony in 48 states including Virginia.

Federal agents from the United States Department of Agriculture again searched the property owned by Vick in Smithfield, Virginia, on July 6

Agents seized nearly 70 live dogs, mostly pit bulls, on the land as well as dog carcasses. Investigators also found equipment commonly used in dog fighting.

Police had conducted a previous raid on April 25 as the property was part of a drug investigation that stemmed from the arrest of Vick’s cousin, Davon Boddie, who claimed the residence as his house.

Police found dozens of mistreated dogs allegedly used for fighting. Vick had previously said that he rarely went to the house and did not know that a large kennel on the property could be involved in criminal activity.

The first quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in the NFL, Vick was the number one pick in the 2001 NFL draft.

Japan earthquake nuclear power
The real story here is that even in a massive earthquake, the nuclear reactor performed EXACTLY as it should have. It shut itself down and there was no accidents. But the media loves to keep all the IDIOTS that inhabit this planet scared to death so they make it a story when it really isn’t a story. JD

KASHIWAZAKI, Japan — A powerful earthquake toppled drums of nuclear waste and triggered other problems at the world’s biggest nuclear plant, Japanese officials revealed Tuesday, raising the possibility of a second radioactive leak at the site.

An earthquake Monday off the Japanese coast killed nine people, started a small fire at the sprawling Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear complex and caused 312 gallons of radioactive water from the plant to spill into the Sea of Japan. Tokyo Electric Power Co., which owns the plant, didn’t announce the leak until nearly 12 hours after the quake struck.

“They were hiding the truth,” said Masako Sawai, researcher at the Tokyo-based Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center.

The events are just the latest embarrassments for Japan’s nuclear industry, which has a history of accidents and cover-ups.

Tokyo Electric spokesman Akitsuka Kobayashi said Tuesday that the quake knocked over 100 barrels of waste. “A few” of the drums, containing plastic bags of radioactive waste, broke open, he said. He refused to comment further, saying an investigation was underway.

The Associated Press, citing an unnamed Tokyo Electric official, reported 50 cases of malfunctioning and trouble had been found at the plant since Monday’s quake, which killed at least nine people and left 13,000 homeless. Japan’s Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.8 magnitude; the U.S. Geological Survey reported it was 6.6. The plant remains closed as an inspection continues.

The plant is already under fire for not announcing the spill of radioactive water for hours after the quake. “They raised the alert too late,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters in Tokyo. “I have sent stern instructions that such alerts must be raised seriously and swiftly. Those involved should repent their actions.”

Tokyo Electric spokesman Kobayashi said plant officials discovered the spill 2½ hours after the 10:13 a.m. quake but didn’t realize radioactive water had drained into the sea until 8:10 p.m.; they went public with the news at 9:45 p.m.

Japan, which has no domestic sources for oil and gas, relies on 55 nuclear plants for about one-third of its electrical power. Environmentalists have long warned that the nuclear plants are vulnerable to the earthquakes that frequently shake Japan. “The government should stop nuclear plants completely,” said activist Sawai.

A series of missteps has tainted the nuclear industry in Japan:

•In 1999, two workers were killed and more than 100 were injured at a nuclear plant in Tokaimura in eastern Japan after being exposed to massive amounts of radiation.

•In 2003, Tokyo Electric was forced to suspend operations at its 17 plants after it confessed to falsifying safety records.

•In 2004, four workers were scalded to death by steam and hot water after a pipe broke at a nuclear plant in western Japan.

•Last year, a judge shut down Japan’s second-biggest nuclear plant — in Shika on the west coast — saying it was not prepared to withstand an earthquake.

Thunderstorms and flooding were expected Tuesday throughout the quake zone, increasing the likelihood that the quake-softened, water-logged ground would give way on hillsides and cause even more damage, officials said.

Light rain began to fall by early afternoon in Kashiwazaki and up to 2.4 inches were expected by Wednesday morning, according to the local observatory.

“The damage is more than we had imagined,” Kashiwazaki Mayor Hiroshi Aida said while inspecting damaged areas of his town. “We want to restore the water supply as soon as possible so more people can return home.”

Nine people in their 70s or 80s — six women and three men — were killed in the quake, and 47 were seriously injured.

The Defense Ministry dispatched 450 soldiers to the devastated area to clear rumble, search for any survivors under collapsed buildings and provide food, water and toilet facilities. People formed long lines to fill bottles with fresh water.

About 50,000 homes were without water and 35,000 were without gas as of Tuesday morning, local official Mitsugu Abe said. About 27,000 households were without power.

Near midnight, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said a 6.6-magnitude quake hit off the west coast, shaking wide areas of Japan, but it was unrelated to the Niigata quake to the north and there were no immediate reports of damage.

HELP!!! CALL 911!!! Someone kidnapped Madonna and replaced her with her 85 year old sister!!! Look at those boney old arms. Check out those vein laden hands!! Damn, she hit the wall hard and then the wall fell on her!

But even as an estimated 2 billion people watched its concerts across seven continents organisers were again forced to defend charges of hypocrisy. The latest attacks came after US television network Fox revealed Live Earth’s London headline act, pop star Madonna, had invested in some of America’s most polluting companies. Fox reported Madonna’s charitable Ray of Light Foundation has $US4.2 million ($A4.9 million) invested in heavily polluting companies such as aluminium company Alcoa and the Ford Motor Company.

Using information from the Foundation’s most recent tax returns, for 2005, Fox reported Madonna holds shares in forestry products Weyerhaeuser and several companies involved in oil exploration, digging and refining, including British Petroleum. Fox quotes a 2002 study from the University of Massachusetts’ Political Research Institute that ranked Alcoa No. 9 on a list of all-time toxic US companies. The same UMass PRI study ranked Ford Motor Company at No. 7 on the Toxic Top 10.

Madonna declined to comment. But Live Earth founder Kevin Wall defended her, saying she had demonstrated commitment to the project. “Today we’re not focusing on what she or any of the artists may have done in their past; it is about the future.”

Concerts were also held in Washington, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Shanghai and Sydney. The event was organised by former US vice-president Al Gore, who called for people to demand an international treaty within the next two years to cut global warming by 90 per cent in developed nations.

But the whiff of hypocrisy has dogged Live Earth. “The artists formerly known as huge carbon footprints,” sniffed a headline in London’s The Guardian by columnist Marina Hyde, pointing out the contradiction in having pop stars, such as the Police’s Sting, who has advertised luxury Jaguar sports cars, exhorting people to save energy.

One of the most serious criticisms — that Live Earth itself has left a hefty carbon footprint — will be assessed in coming weeks by independent global auditors PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

In Sydney, an estimated 20 cubic tonnes of rubbish — about the same as produced at a cricket match — was removed and recycled from Aussie Stadium in the wake of nearly 45,000 fans who came to see acts including Crowded House, Wolfmother, Missy Higgins and Sneaky Sound System.

But Sydney’s Live Earth organiser and climate change adviser, Michael Molitor, said at least half the energy used to power the stage was created by Live Earth’s bio-diesel generators, while the rest was from renewable energy. Concert-goers were encouraged to take public transport.

First, Thanks Rick for getting the servers back up and online. We had a pretty severe crash and the site was down for a few days.

old shrew madonna
I am having so much fun watching Madonna become an old and insignificant. Take a look at those boney old arms and the sagging flesh!!! Good stuff here. The global warming “Live Earth” shows were real yawners indeed. People don’t buy it … unless they are idiots. JD

Neil McCormick finds confused messages and an unimpressive line-up at London’s Live Earth concert

“If you wanna save the planet, jump up and down!” urged Madonna. Can global warming be stopped by an out-of-breath, middle-aged, super-rich narcissist in a leotard and high heels?

Linking aerobics with the environment: Madonna at Live Earth

The superannuated pop queen was certainly up for the challenge, but judging by the negligible response to the text message number displayed on stage, I suspect the public may have been justifiably confused by the link between aerobics and the environment.

As global satellite multi-media musical entertainment, Live Earth was just about adequate. As a platform for stadium politics, it was a dismal affair. “Can you help save the earth?” bellowed Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles. Cue muted murmur of support.

“We might be screwed if that’s the response,” he half-joked.

We know what to expect by now: bands play three songs each; celebrities make speeches; short films illustrate the cause. The portmanteau aspect tends to drain momentum, and with no Bob Geldof figure to drive the event along, Live Earth lacked urgency, emotion or sense of internal narrative. Instead we had Geri Haliwell, chattily complaining about “this freaky weather”.

The whole tone felt misjudged: Al Gore appeared by satellite, to no great reaction in the stadium, and seemed to be addressing a small audience of native Americans, not seizing the world by the reins.

The message itself was confused: Keane performed in front of the legend “Insulate your ceilings and walls”. Razorlight performed America to footage of penguins.

Duran Duran stuck to supermodels, but somehow tried to turn Girls on Film into an ecological anthem. Simon Le Bon urged the crowd to sing “Change, change, we gotta start the change” without much success, perhaps because he was having trouble singing it particularly well himself.

The failure of singalongs became something of a theme of the day, bands appearing to expect a much greater familiarity with their hits than was apparent. Only a smattering of acts made any genuine attempts to engage with the issues.

Will.i.am of the entertaining Black Eyed Peas had an angry, despairing rap and singer-songwriters David Gray and Damien Rice performed a new version of Que Sera, Sera in which they pondered a future where we would be “drowning in our own s**t”, but the laissez-faire chorus of “Whatever will be, will be” probably summed up the mood better.

The bill was, if we’re honest, not particularly impressive. Live Aid and Live 8 were the greatest gatherings of musical talent ever seen, but they didn’t happen by accident. On this evidence, Gore lacks the persuasiveness and contact books of Geldof and Bono. Where were the great campaigning rock bands of our times?

There was no U2, Radiohead, Coldplay, REM, Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan (indeed, no classic veterans at all, which may have accounted for the failure of the singalongs). Where were the collaborations and reunions? Live 8 got Pink Floyd, Live Earth got Spinal Tap.

The experienced stadium rock acts briefly instilled a sense of occasion, honours going to Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and Genesis. Up and coming arena acts Kasabian and Snow Patrol held their own, but then the mood would drift with middle-ranking pop from Paolo Nutini or Corinne Bailey Rae. Jazzy piano soul from John Legend sent the horde streaming towards the toilets.

Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth, woke a lot of people up to the very real and imminent dangers of climate change. But the inconvenient truth of Live Earth is that it was a soulless telethon, with no clarity or drive.

The concluding lyrics of Madonna’s closing song, Hung Up, may be ironically prophetic: “You’ll wake up one day / But it will be too late.”

I have nothing against Al Gore III for getting busted for blowin fatties. I am an ex-pothead from way back. I do however think its rather funny that he shares that ridiculous name with his father. It’s no wonder the kid is a stoner. By the way … I don’t know if this means anything but Luguna Niguel and Laguna Beach proper are known homosexual enclaves. JD

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Al Gore’s son was pulled over for speeding on a California freeway early today and arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of marijuana and prescription drugs, authorities said.

Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 160 kilometres an hour on the San Diego Freeway when he was pulled over by sheriff’s deputies who said they smelled marijuana, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino.

The deputies searched the car and found less than an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder, Amormino said.

“He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs,” Amormino said.

Gore was being held in the men’s central jail in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail.

Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for his parents, did not immediately return phone messages.
